Bonaire is a small island (111 square miles) and its long and narrow, only 24 miles north to south, and 3 to 5 miles wide from east to west. It’s also a great place to explore, which you can’t do unless you have transportation. Your options are to rent a car, taxi, bicycle, scooter or walking. There is no public transport and Uber isn’t on the island.
WHY WE RECOMMEND OUR CLIENTS RENT A VEHICLE ON BONAIRE
We recommend our clients rent a car, preferably a pickup, as the roads can be rough. Taxis are fine if you’re not going far from where you are staying, but they can get expensive for more than that. Scooters are potentially dangerous, especially if you’re not used to driving on island roads. It’s pretty hot, so walking is going to be unpleasant and dusty.
THE ADVANTAGES OF RENTING A VEHICLE
With a rental vehicle, you can get out and about on the island to explore areas like the beaches, Washington Slagbaai National Park and dive sites.
There will be no problem getting all your dive gear into the back of a pickup.
With your own vehicle, you have the convenience and flexibility to come and go as you please.
Parking is usually not an issue.
TOP TIP - BOOK EARLY TO GET YOUR VEHICLE OF CHOICE.
Most of the rental vehicles are sticks, so if you want an automatic, then you need to book well in advance. We recommend you book your dive trip at least six months in advance to secure your preferred Bonaire choices for vehicles, accommodation and flights. While it is possible to make earlier or later bookings, availability may limit your options.
